Belize city itself is not really a tourist attraction, although you can take some nice photos at the river bridge. The water on the beach is brown, because a river goes in quite near. I have been told that the cays are beautiful. Hotels cost more or less the same as in the USA.
But being at Belize you have a ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY. There is a one-day tour to the MAYAN RUINS OF TIKAL IN GUATEMALA. It costs more or less 80 dollars, and is the safest way of going to Tikal. The place is fantastic.
Buses run from Belize to Chetumal. When I was there over 10 years ago, they were not comfortable. But since Mexico has an excellent executive bus service (Turistar and Enlaces Terrestres Nacionales- ETN), it could be that they already go there. At the time I was in Mexico the best bus service that existed was Cristóbal Colón, nearly as bad as Greyhound.
I imagine that from Belice to Chetumal (which is also another Mexican seaside attraction) should take some 10 hours, and from there to Cancún another 6.
It is difficult to find cheap hotels in Cancún, because 80% of the hotels are 5-Stars international hotels: Holiday Inn, Hyatt, Camino Real, Intercontinental, are some of them. I paid 80 Dollars at the Intercontinental. There is also an hotel next to the bus station in Cancún, and it costs some 35 Dollars per night, but it is a prefabricated construction. However, the size of the rooms is normal and the beds are comfortable.
There should be some 3 miles from the bus station to the beaches, but some hotels can be as far as 10 miles away.
If you look at my posting (in Spanish) "Paisajes de la América Latina", you will find photos of Tikal (Guatemala) and Cancún (Mexico). Chetumal should be cheaper and I have been told that it is very nice. If you go to Acapulco, you will find good hotels for 30 Dollars. But it is far away, and I definitely prefer Cancún.
Have a nice time.

The Mayan ruins of Tikal can be visited in a one-day tour by plane from Belize. The tour costs some 80 Dollars (at least, that was the price, when I was there).

This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
Enjoy it.
