I´m an international student studying in Uppsala, Sweden in the spring. Should I live in the Studentstaden-Flogsta or the Basic Hotel? Any advice would be appreciated.

Basic Hotel has small kitchen areas in each room (ie: no oven or grill, just a sink, a cupboard, two hotplates and basic kitchenware). And no common area, and it's more expensive. It might not be your best choice if you'd prefer a more communal way of living and meeting your fellow students. However, the bathrooms are nice and the rooms are clean but sparse. Won't be having a look at the Flogsta one for another few weeks, but the communal kitchens are meant to be good. Also, one other small bit of info is that at the Basic hotel, if you start at the end of the month, they make you pay for the whole month, which is really annoying. I'm not actually studying there, this is just stuff I've picked up from people I know there, and from staying in the student section at the Basic Hotel for a few nights.

  Flogsta or Rackarberg?  [16-Nov-2000]

Hi jkramm,
When I was in Uppsala, I stayed at Rackarberg, which is also a student housing complex (much smaller than Flogsta) and it is a lot closer to town (5-10 minute walk to centre). I absolutely loved it, because of the corridor setup, so that you were living with Swedish students and a couple of other international students. I had a bike, but I didn't really need it all that much - it was more of a fun thing to have.
I spent quite a bit of time out at Flogsta too, and that seems like such a fun time - the better thing about Flogsta is that you have a common tv/living room, which is very social. You don't get that (the living room, not the socialness!) at Rackarberg, but you do share a kitchen and bathroom (not so many people in the corridor as in Flogsta, I think in Flogsta you have about 12 people in the corridor, so you get your own bathroom, but in Rackarberg there are about 6).
I have also spent a few nights at the Basic Hotel, and I just don't think it compares to the student housing complexes of Flogsta and Rackarberg. Some of my fondest memories of Uppsala are within my corridor having dinner parties with my corridormates, and having corridor parties. I don't think Basic Hotel is conducive to that at all. Plus, it's not just students living there, it's a function hotel, so you get people on confernces etc. which takes away a bit from the student experience.
My advice would be without a doubt go for Flogsta over Basic Hotel, and if you get the chance to have Rackarberg, consider it too. Either of them will be such great fun.

If you need a companion just to make sure things go ok, I'll be happy to oblige! Just love that place and the fun that can be had!

Hi, I´m going to have four-month study in University of Uppsala from January 2003. Currrently I met the housing problem. The room arranged for us by the University of Uppsala will be SEK4200 per month, which is too expensive to afford! Since I'm taking a special program cooperated by University of Groningen and Unversity of Uppsala, I was declined to be accommodated in those rooms for regular exchange students by the school. The school appears that either you live in the expensive room or no place to live. I'm very upset about it! I would appreciate if any one could tell me how can I find a room not via school.
